Second Life

Updated: Jun 21, 2023

Mexpower and her sister companies have over two decades of combined experience in the fast fashion supply chain. In the year 2019, we imported at least eight million articles of clothing and accessories, making up about 23,500 SKUs across the brands we serve. Our production partners create retail-worthy products. However, there are some articles of clothing and accessories that will never reach our customers’ retail shelves due to quality deviations from the brands’ standards, ranging from stitching errors to discolouration. The percentage of rejected goods may be negligible compared to the millions of pieces we import, but the reality of having to deal with these physical items is significant.

While many may discard these rejected items, which will most likely land up in a landfill, Mexpower decided to donate them to a non-governmental organisation (NGO) instead. They may be rejected from the retail stores for falling short of a brand’s quality, but they are still well made clothing and accessories. It would have been a total waste!

We got in touch with Grace Community Services, an experienced NGO with a large network of beneficiaries and connections to other NGOs serving communities all over the Klang Valley, to arrange for the collection and distribution of up to 8,873 articles of clothing and accessories. A wide range of fashion items like printed T-shirts, workwear, jackets, pants, and shoes for men, women, and children were properly packed and arranged by the Mexpower team.

Yesterday, Mr. Joshua Nathan of Grace Community Services visited our premise to collect and transport around 300 cartons of goods to their office in Berkeley Town Centre, Klang. At their office, some items will be displayed for walk-in beneficiaries to choose from while majority of the donated goods will be divided and delivered straight to the grassroots, like the urban poor of Greater Kuala Lumpur, or passed on to other like-minded NGOs.

“We foresee at least 500 needy families* receiving this donation, either directly from our network of beneficiaries, or through other NGOs we are in close contact with.” Mr. Joshua Nathan

Mexpower is glad to have given a “second life” to these fast fashion items instead of throwing them into the landfill, but we are even more happy to be passing on good quality clothing and accessories to families who need a change of clothes but cannot afford it. We hope for this donation to not just help someone in need change his/her damaged clothes, but to also spread the happiness one feels when putting on a new t-shirt or a pretty dress.

* As of the 1st of March 2021, Grace Community Services reports that all donated items have been passed on to at least 700 needy families across the Klang Valley.
